Serbian Orthodox Church in Ráckeve
A valid heritage of the Middle Ages is the Gothic Serbian Orthodox Church in Ráckeve. It is very unique, because it is the only still standing gothic orthodox church in Hungary. It was built in 1487. There are medieval frescos on the walls.
In fact, we are talking about a complete set of buildings, in the area surrounding the church you can see a cupola bell tower of more than 40 meters high, the bell tower's house, as well as the parish house and a Renaissance school building. In the garden there are up to 200 years old graves with Greek inscriptions.
The church had lost a lot of tragedy in a miraculous way: more fire and even bombing, but fortunately no explosion occurred. From the Turkish times survived a legend about a janissary who demaged with his sword an icon of the church, but when he left the door he died instantly. For this reason, the Turkish army did not damage the Christian church. The overlaid icon can be viewed at Szentendre in the Orthodox Museum.
On the 29th August of each year, on the feast of the Assumption, the Serb-Orthodox population of the area holds a meeting in the church.
